the bread. Served with just the right
amount of melted mozzarella, the
tangy ripeness of the tomato beautifully
contrasted the milky cheese. I had the
Parma ham bruschetta, £7.95; layers of
Parma ham on generous slices of Italian
bread drizzled in olive oil. The bruschetta
was seasoned and toasted to perfection,
but this is a big starter, particularly if a
pasta or pizza main is to follow.
Like my choice; the quattro fromaggio ravioli tossed in a pink tomato and basil sauce,
£8.95. Al dente pasta parcels revealed a more-ish creamy cheese filling, all wrapped
up in a fresh and flavoursome sauce. Lily had the king prawn linguine with flat leaf
parsley and white wine, £12.95, which, in my opinion, didn’t look like it would be up to
much. How wrong I was. The juicy prawns could have easily belonged in a specialist
seafood eatery, with the white wine further enhancing their flavour.
Normally I’m a bit of a carb-phobic, and after two courses of bread and pasta, I would
ordinarily skip dessert ... if only it wasn’t for the torta della nonna, £4.50, conjuring
up images in my head of a sweet old lady who might be Luciana and Francesco’s
by
granny, making her famous secret recipe dessert in the kitchen. To the disgust of our
waistlines but the delight of our tastebuds, we made room for the rich and decadent
almond tart served with Italian ice cream.
Barbarossa has the warmth and sincerity of a family run business - you get the distinct
impression that everyone genuinely cares about what they are doing - but it also has
the sophistication and elegance of a contemporary restaurant that is dedicated to
raising the bar without decrying its roots. Whilst mum and dad are behind the scenes,
brother and sister take care of business with flair and a smile.
