KNOW YOUR AREA
Y
ou don’t need to do too much of a tour to see that
Pollokshields is one of Glasgow’s most culturally and
architecturally diverse neighbourhoods.
Designed in the mid-19th century as the UK’s first planned
garden suburb, it’s a huge, sprawling maze of tree lined streets,
drives and avenues featuring some of the city’s finest Victorian
and Edwardian architecture and one of its largest multi-cultural
communities.
The affluence of the area is evident by the abundance of
large sandstone villas, looking as imposing and impressive
today as the day they were built, and the character filled
blonde sandstone tenements, and good schools, are bringing
thirtysomethings to Pollokshields in their droves.
Modern Pollokshields is split east and west with the east side
home to a large section of Glasgow’s Asian community, with
Albert Drive not only home to the award-winning Tramway
Theatre but also the place to find the best in Asian arts, food
and produce.
Add to the mix the area’s close proximity to the beautiful Pollok
Park and the one stop shopping experience at Silverburn,
Pollokshields should tick most of the boxes on many a buyer’s
wish list.
Property
Take a drive along the likes of Hamilton Avenue or Dalziel Drive
and you’ll find stunningly handsome homes with sweeping
driveways and beautifully tendered gardens. Property prices
in these addresses are not for the faint hearted with, at time
of going to press, a four bedroom house for sale on Hamilton
Avenue looking for offers in excess of £795, 000.
If a mansion suits your style but not your budget, there’s no
shortage of quality conversions in the area, many still housing
original features like stained glass and wood panelling.
“Part of Pollokshields’ popularity is the mix of properties
available and at both extremes of the pricing scale,” says Paul
Murphy of the award-winning Personal Estate Agents. Paul, who
has held the title of Scotland’s best estate agent for the past
four years, works and lives in the south side so he very clearly
has the inside track on the area. “From palatial family homes
to one bedroom starter flats in need of some refurbishment,
Pollokshields caters to all lifestyles and budgets.”
Those interested in new builds should look to the Utopia
and Southgate developments at the most eastern point of
Pollokshields. Expect to pay around £126, 000 for a hi spec
