The low down Mammograms are the most powerful breast cancer
detection tool and consist of an X-ray of the breast. Mamma is
Latin for breast and the aim of mammography is to pick up cancer
in its very early stages before it has a chance to spread.
The process I’ve had breast problems in the past and I’m keen
to go for annual mammograms but I’m slightly nervous, even
though I’ve had one before.
I removed my clothes to my waist – quite embarrassing but I
just tried to switch off. The doctor checked for any swellings
or lumps and I was encouraged to chat about anything that
concerned me before we started with the Mammogram.
The radiographer helped place my breast between the plates
of the machine, including some tissue leading to my underarm
which explains my slightly contorted pose. When the plates
squeezed together it was the tightest most pressing-like
feeling I’ve ever experienced, but not painful as such.
