Lunch @ Barbarossa words
A
s a devout Westender, I need a pretty good reason to stray from the confines
of my comfort zone. This time, I had two such reasons to venture to Glasgow’s
Southside: my friend Lily and I hadn’t had a proper catch up in far too long,
and I’d heard that Barbarossa on Clarkston Road, with its newly extended wine bar,
wasn’t just another run-of-the-mill Italian restaurant.
Barbarossa is a family run affair and on our arrival we were greeted by Luciana,
daughter of owners Enzo and Elizabeth, and front of house manager. Younger brother
Francesco is the wine bar’s head chef.
The theory behind the wine bar is to offer an alternative to dining in the main
restaurant. By being that little bit more informal, the wine bar appeals to younger
crowds and larger groups who want to share a few antipasti over a glass of wine, in
a relaxed atmosphere that isn’t relaxed about the standard of service or the quality
of the food. The look is understated but undeniably stylish. It’s a roomy conservatory
kitted out with dark wood flooring, sleek leather chairs and the most impressive retro-
inspired hanging lamp shades. A touch of warmth and homeliness, integral to any
Italian dining experience, is achieved by the use of rustic colours and subtle lighting.
Lily and I have many things in common - wine being one of them – and the Pinot Grigio
recommended to us by Francesco was refreshing and delicious, on its own and with
food. At £14.90 a bottle, it was exceptional value for money too.
For starters, Lily tried the bruschetta topped with Napoli sauce and melted mozzarella,
£5.95. Miraculously, the rich homemade tomato and basil sauce didn’t soak through
