EYE ON THE CITY
Grolsch
O
riginal, quirky and distinctive, Grolsch isn’t afraid to be
different, choosing to shirk trends and concentrating instead
on brewing great, classic Dutch beers.
Those clever Dutch. Back in 1615, young Dutch brewer Peter Cuyper - the unofficial
‘father’ of Grolsch - rose from lowly beginnings as an apprentice in the Grolsch
Brewery to become a master brewer. Not only did Peter’s brewing skills impress the
brewery owner, they also caught the eye of the owner’s daughter. They married within
a year and following his rise to the top, Peter inherited the brewery, using his time to
perfect the Grolsch recipe as we know it today.
The Grolsch brand is synonymous with its iconic ‘Swingtop’ bottle, immediately
identifiable the world over. Originally crafted to protect the characteristic sparkle of
each Grolsch, the ‘Swingtop’ was redesigned this year. Those guys at Grolsch like to
take things slowly to ensure perfection - this redesign is only the fourth time the bottle
has been altered since its introduction in 1897.
Not only is the Swingtop a design classic, it’s practical too. Rage Against the Machine
bassist, Tim Commerford, uses the rubber tops of Grolsch beer bottles to keep his
bass guitar straps attached.
What makes Grolsch such an influential brand is that it has been around for so long
yet brewed in the same way for around 400 years; it has remained consistent in both
taste and style.
