PROFILE
How do you keep abreast of industry trends? Some come via word of mouth, attending confer- ences and shows but the majority comes from reading industry publications. Finding time to read these can be difficult when you are busy doing the work. I often have a 2ft high pile of magazines on my desk!
What industry titles do you read? As many as I can – mainly technical publications such as T e Naval Architect, Engineering and Professional Boat Builder as well as glossy superyacht titles such as Boat International and the Yacht Report.
How do you motivate and inspire your team? I like to try and get people to take ownership of their work and the part of the project to which it relates. T at way they don’t just feel like a cog in a machine but that they have been instrumental in the process and can take pride in their work being good quality, well presented and giving the customer what they expected.
How do you see the industry as a whole changing in the future? Regulations aimed at limiting the environmental impact of vessels will undoubtedly become increas- ingly stringent and with the soaring cost of oil owners and operators will be looking for more efficient vessels. We will have to continue to adapt our services and products to meet the needs of the market in a pro-active way.
What changes would you specifi cally like to see within the industry? With specifi c reference to the design of large motor yachts I believe that design disciplines have become much separated. As yachts have become larger and more complex there is a need for a greater level of technical input at earlier stages and on many projects this does not happen.
Where will you be in 10 years’ time? Wherever life and work takes me as long as I am still doing something I enjoy! SBI

The RINA- Lloyds Register Educational Trust Ship Safety Awards
recognise recent innovations or developments which have led to an improvement of safety at sea, or which have the potential to do so.
Entries may be submitted directly by individuals or teams from universities and industry from any country, and may cover design, construction, research, equipment or operations. Entries are judged on originality, quality of design, feasibility of production and contribution to ship safety.
Members who are aware of recent work by a university, company or organisation which has or could lead to an improvement in safety at sea are invited to nominate them for one of the Awards, giving brief details of the achievement. The nominated university, company or organisation will then be invited to submit an entry.
There are separate categories for universities and industry. An Award of £1500 is made in each of the categories and will be presented at the 2009 RINA Annual Dinner.
