Operations Apex, Tenax, Velox and Phenix all have similar dimensions at 37m loa, a beam of 14m and an operational draught of 6.70m. Tenax, Apex, Phenix and Velox


have a maximum speed of 15kts at 19m3

vessels are furthermore equipped with Voith turbo fins for extended manoeuvrability and are equipped with oil recovery, fire-fighting equipment (FiFi1) and also for salvage in open waters. The towing equipment onboard


includes double drum hydraulic type Karm winches with a pull force of 200t and a break force of 300t. All four tugs were built at Astilleros


Gondan in Spain and carry the notation Det Norske Veritas +1A1 Tug EO OilRec Fi-Fi I Escort (150/10) ISM ISPS. The most recent of the newbuilds is


Apex, which was delivered to Solent Towage earlier in 2008.


Generation Powered by two Rolls Royce Bergen type C25 engines (33L8P) the tugs’ engines have a total cont inuous output of 5040kW, 6850bhp. Sister vessel Velox has a slightly lower horse power rating at 6530bhp.

The vessels are specially designed


for escort purposes and is equipped each with two Voith propellers; Apex, Phenix and Tenax have Voith Schneider Propellers (VSP) 32 R5/250-2 and Velox has two VSP 32 R6/210-2. Apex and Phenix have two Volvo


Penta type D7AT/TA generators at 13kw power and Tenax and Velox have two Volvo Penta type TAMD74A generators at 136kW power. Electric power on all four vessels is provided by two Stamford generators


powered at 400V/220V-50Hz. In the escort role the vessels can


generate braking forces of 150tons at 10kts and steering forces of 140tons at the same speed. All of the tugs are equipped for fire-fighting to FiFi1 standards and pollution control operations. Solent Towage’s fleet also includes


the azimuth stern drive terminal tug, Thrax and tugboats Asterix and Ibex, all of which sail under the British flag. SBI
