increasing the public awareness of the benefits of the Marine Transportation System and improving the alignment of the Maritime Administration’s programmes with public and industry needs.

Intermodal vs. sea-based The goal relating

to intermodal

leadership is to enhance the US intermodal transportation

system

by improving its freight velocity and passenger movement. One way that MARAD will do this

is by examining the potential impacts on the US transportation system of the expansion of the Panama Canal project, Arctic transportation and all water routes through from Asia through the Suez Canal. They aim to reduce congestion through the expansion of system capacity, developing and eventually implementing a National Port Gateway and Freight Corridor Strategy and advocating the increased use of the US marine highways to expand system capacity.

Developing talent The final strategic goal relates to

the personal development of

employees to achieve the mission of the Agency, which it believes can be done by providing cross-training and development opportunities to ensure an agile workforce, creating succession opportunities and investing in leadership training for employees and tying in individual performance plans to the overall corporate goals of the Agency. The Maritime Administration fully expects that the process will be ongoing

Another objective within this goal is

the acceleration and expanded adoption of national and international standards impacting intermodal operations, by playing an integral role in developing International Maritime Organization (IMO) rules and International Organization

for Standardization standards for the maritime industry.

and understands the importance of regularly assessing the leadership skills of

its workforce and industry

effectiveness. Its vision of the US Maritime

Transportation System going forwards is that it will not only support the growing importance of international trade to the continued prosperity of the USA by easing congestion throughout the entire intermodal network, but also by enhancing the US prominence in the international marine transportation community, promoting US shipbuilding and repair facilities and overcoming impediments to maritime system growth while addressing the concerns over safety, security and the environment, to name but a few. The report concluded by saying:

“The Maritime Administration can advocate best practices to ensure the implementation of methods and technologies that will address today’s and tomorrow’s opportunities.” SBI
