Brazil
Brazil is the fifth largest country in the world. There are nine
dioceses, all with the Union of Episcopal Anglican Women of
Brazil (UMEAB) – the Anglican women’s organisation that is
part of the worldwide Mothers’ Union. The Anglican Church is
seeking to empower women and help them to understand that
the Gospel is for them. This is not easy after centuries of women
being made to feel inferior.
Province of Southern Cone
Uruguay
Uruguay has no formal Mothers’ Union, but a group
based in the cathedral in Montevideo meets for
worship, fellowship and prayer, and helps to run
fundraising events. The Church is working with
women’s groups in both rural and urban areas.
Provincial to Canterbury
Bermuda
Bermuda is a group of some 150 islands off the east coast of the USA. A British Overseas
territory, it has a buoyant economy, though there are significant
areas of poverty. Although Mothers’ Union has ceased to be
active there, the Mothers’ Union banner is proudly
displayed in St George’s Church. The Bishop would like to
revive Mothers’ Union in Bermuda and use Mothers’
Union family-based programmes on themes such as
parenting to help tackle some of the social problems.
