soon adds up to a hefty total.
Other suggestions include:
• Setting printers to print double-sided
• Consolidating IT equipment (for example, sharing a networked printer instead of having a number of separate
ones, or using PCs for video conferencing instead of having dedicated video conferencing hardware)
• Optimizing data centres and servers (for example by running several virtual servers on one machine, rather
than on separate computers, or by identifying and removing redundant servers and drives on the network).
Of course, you don’t have to stop there (although if you did, you would already already have achieved a lot).
The possibilities of using technology to mitigate the problems caused by technology are limited only by
your vision.
Many of Google’s global network of data centres are located near dams, the better to take advantage of hydro-
electricity. Now, ever the pioneers, Google have installed one of North America’s largest solar power systems
on the roof of their corporate HQ, the Googleplex. So, when you next type your search terms into the little box
and get 14 million results thrown back at you in a search that took 0.09 seconds to complete, remember that,
through your display, you are basking in a glimmer of the California sun.
