24 INSULATE YOUR OFFICE
For such a cold country, the UK down the years has built rather poorly. This has changed over
recent years, with modern buildings that are purpose-built to be more energy efficient. But old
buildings, as a rule, haemorrhage heat energy out through walls and windows, and the only
possibility here is to retro-fit.
Fitting cavity wall insulation is not prohibitively expensive, and will markedly reduce the 30 percent of energy
lost through walls. The savings made will naturally depend on the size of your premises, but a property which
needs £250 worth of this type of insulation will typically gain some £150 per year in savings on heating, and
about a tonne in carbon dioxide in terms of environmental impact.
If you have solid walls, you can fit external or internal insulation, which can be even more effective. You will
also, where relevant, want to ensure that you have loft and floor insulation, insulated hot water pipes and tanks,
and draught-proofed premises.
Double glazing, which can represent a bit more of an expenditure, cuts heat loss through windows in half, while
slashing noise levels from traffic.
