RECYCLE YOUR PAPER
Recycling in the UK has always lagged far behind that in other northern European economies,
and until even a year or two ago, more than half of waste from office-based and other
enterprises ended up straight in landfill.
To be fair, there was little incentive to do things otherwise. When the choice was between paying for recycling
and dumping everything into a skip, it was clear what bottom line-conscious businesses were going to do.
This has all now changed. In October 2007 the Landfill Directive came into force, requiring businesses not to
send ordinary non-hazardous waste to landfill without first being treated, which includes sorting for recycling.
In April 2008 the landfill tax was increased to £32 per tonne, and will increase by a further £8 per year until
2011 at least, when the increases will be reviewed.
Prices for waste disposal are rising and government legislation is tightening, two good reasons to improve your
recycling practices now… quite apart from the environmental advantages; one tonne of waste paper recycled
represents a saving of 15 trees, 2.5 barrels of crude oil, two-and-a-quarter cubic metres of landfill space, and
27 kilos of air pollutants.
