Set-Up #2. PRECIS.
“Standard 60x60cm softbox on the Explorer 1500 (or a Gemini
system) positioned at the bottom of the stairs to the left of
the model. Extend the lighting stand to its max to get the light
high enough to cast a shadow under the model’s chin. Also, try
a slightly slower shutter speed to ensure some ambient light
is captured in the background”.

Metering...
Set-Up #2.
“Aim to meter your lights between f8
and f11.5, depending on the focal length
of your lens. The longer the focal length, the
shallower the depth of field and the more light
you’ll need to ensure both eyes remain in

focus”.
Correct Histogram
Example
Exposure...
“This is of course the digital age, so if you don’t have a light meter you can use the
histogram on the back of your camera to check the exposure. Ensure that you have
a full histogram (see histogram example). If you have the flashing highlights function on your camera, use it so
you can check you are not clipping the all important highlight detail. If your histogram is disappearing off the right
of the LCD, then you are over-exposing your image. If it is bunched to the left of the LCD, then you are under
exposing your shot. The aim is to fill the histogram, whilst just maintaining the
highlights”.
