We live in an age where image is designed to stand
out and every photographer wants to be regarded for their technical ability. So many photographers today
are trying to light their images with several lights, light shaping reflectors, softboxes and a whole
abundance of other tools; which are all perfect for big commercial shoots, but what happens when you
want to get several different looks in a short
amount of time?
“Trying to work with too many lights can

month’s ‘Hough To’ we’ll be demonstrating
different looks with simple one-light set-ups”
Simply moving back to basics from time to time can
be both refreshing and liberating. It will also make you
think where you position your light and actually
contemplate the effect you want to achieve. With the broad range of softboxes and reflectors available and the
two types of ringflash options produced by Bowens, you can easily create subtly different effects with a single light
source almost instantly. It’s almost a case of change position, meter, shoot. Once you’ve tried it you’ll be hooked.
1 First things first...
“Before you start shooting, set up your lights as illustrated in
the diagrams. Don’t despair if you don’t have exactly the
same reflectors or softboxes as described. Other reflectors can be
used in their place, but will produce slightly varying effects to that
shown in the final image here. As I mentioned in the previous
tutorial, the principal here is to experiment with you lighting set-
ups”.
