Recent new builds of barges are booming even despite the prediction for the barge building business to slow down due to the new OPA’ 90 that will come in force in 2017.


W


ith shipyards on the coast of America showing rapid growth in their production of


barges, and due to the new Oil Pollution Act (OPA), there is a need to get vessels up to standard as quickly as possible. Bollinger specialises in the construction


of OPA’90 compliant barges for the offshore and inland industry. Vessels ranging from 20,000bbl to 240,000bbl are currently being built and delivered from Bollinger Gretna and Bollinger Marine Fabricators. Its standard designs encompass units for inland operations and harbour services with 28,000bbl being the usual sized unit. Bollinger Shipyards has contracts for new barges for Bouchard Corp, K-Sea Transportation, Moran, and Horizon Maritime. Bollinger recently delivered B No 260,


a double-hull 60,000bbl oil tank barge built to meet the requirements of the OPA’90, to Bouchard Ocean Services. Barge B No 260 is a manned ocean, black oil barge measuring 106.68m long, with a 21.33m beam, and a depth of 7.62m. A sister-vessel to B No 262 and B No 264 currently in production at Bollinger Marine Fabricators. T e B No 260 was

built and certifi ed by American Bureau of Shipping and the United States Coast Guard to meet the requirements of OPA’90 with 10 cargo compartments and two separate pumping systems. The barge is equipped with a five


million BTU/hr vapor thermal oil heater, two Byron Jackson cargo pumps, driven by Detroit series 60 engines, and the deck is equipped with two EBI model C20-40 electric-hydraulic cranes. Following the delivery from Bollinger


Gretna, B No 260 went directly into service supporting black oil transportation service primarily in the northeast United States. In May 2008 Bollinger also delivered

B No 233, the second of two 35,000bbl units to Bouchard. In the coming months Bollinger will deliver B No 284, a 80,0000bbl clean oil unit equipped with the Intercon connection system, due to be delivered in March 2009; B No 262, a 60,000bbl clean oil barge for delivery in June 2009, and B No 264 , a 60,000bbl clean oil barge with a delivery for March 2010.
