Safety Lives saved by

Guardian T e lives of three fi shermen have been saved thanks to the McMurdo MOB Guardian man overboard and vessel locater alert system. T e system was designed by the RNLI in partnership with McMurdo, a leading suppliers of emergency distress beacons. T e RNLI, which operates the MOB Guardian,

received a vessel overdue alert off Sark, in June. The RNLI St Peter Port lifeboat from Guernsey was then tasked to search for the missing fi shing vessel, Guyona. Guyona was fi tted with the new system only three

months previously. T e incident has demonstrated the eff ectiveness of the RNLI MOB Guardian safety system, which is designed to save fi shermen’s lives. T e MOB Guardian system gives an early alert to

an emergency, helps reduce search time, and provides the rescuers with an up-to-date position for the vessel or man overboard by satellite. If a single-handed fi sherman falls over the side of their vessel, the system will automatically alert search and rescue agencies. Fishermen can also wear a fob incorporating a panic button, so should a crew member become ill or caught in machinery, they can easily request help. T e system is confi dential so location information about a partic- ular vessel is not available publicly.

Environment Stabilizers increase

fuel savings Wesmar roll fi n stabilizers are becoming popular for their fuel savings capabilities on yachts, charter boats, and commercial fi shing boats. Any enclosed boat above 9m can use Wesmar stabilizers. T e fi ns are naturally buoyant so will add no weight, and their wing design adds liſt . T e fuel savings occurs when the stabilizers keep

the boat on an even keel through rough seas and can chart a course in a straight line rather than taking longer routes to fi nd calmer seas. T e inner foam makes the fi n neutrally buoyant

while the core plate provides strength and rigidity. T e whole fi n is covered in a tough fi ber glass shell.

T e wing design creates liſt to counteract the pull of drag in the water. Wesmar has also recently announced a stepped up

stabilizer manufacturing program for the pleasure boat and work boat markets.

Technology New onboard PC

Digital Yacht, a specialist in the supply, installation, and confi guration of marine onboard PC systems, has introduced a new model called the CF80. T e system measures just 28cm x 19cm x 17cm, yet boasts one of the latest Intel dual core processors and ruggedised, anti-vibration shock-proofed 100Gb hard drive. It is optimised for running the latest demanding

marine charting applications, such as 3D bathymetric views and aerial overlays. It has also been engineered for low power consumption and can be powered directly from the ship’s 12V DC power supply with no requirement for a separate inverter. Digital Yacht can supply either Windows XP or

Windows Vista operating systems, and the CF80 is supplied with fi ve NMEA ports for interfacing with other onboard electronics such as GPS, instruments, AIS, or radar. It also has four USB connections for devices like digital cameras, iPods, or mobile phones, and a standard VGA type output for the display.
