Streamlining solution for yacht design A number of new companies have chosen solutions from Dassault Systèmes.

U

K yacht manufacturer Oyster Marine has recently invested in CATIA V5 Yacht Solutions in a

move to improve its design, construction and manufacturing processes. Six seats of the shipbuilding Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) solution have been supplied and will be supported by Dassault Systèmes. CATIA V5 provides a suite of shipbuilding

specific applications which integrate design, detailing, visualisation, analysis, and downstream production information. CATIA decreases the time needed to develop onboard systems, interior designs, and to coordinate production. Yachting companies use CATIA V5 advanced digital design applications to develop integrated 3D product models that include all key design and systems disciplines into a single model that supports concurrent engineering and collaboration between design and production teams. CATIA V5 will enable Oyster Marine

to increase effi ciency and reduce time-to- market by automatically managing links between engineering drawings, the bill of materials, and all phases of manufacture, including the computer numerical control processes that the company is using to make its hull and deck moulds. Oyster Marine has introduced

synchronous collaboration so that everyone involved in a project both internally, and within the extended supply chain, uses the same version of the drawings. T e objective is to reduce production hours and to capture design, engineering, and process knowledge, and embed it into the manufacturing process to produce increased efficiency, higher quality, and greater accuracy. For review and mark-up Oyster Marine

will use 3D XML, the universal XML-based format which enables everyone involved in a project, from the design department right through the extended network of partners and suppliers, to communicate 3D information quickly and easily. T e ability to incorporate rich PLM information into technical documents, marketing brochures, and other communications using 3D XML

Dispersed functionality unifi cation Meanwhile, Dassault Systèmes recently announced that Arthur M Barbeito & Associates Inc, a luxury yacht designer, has chosen CATIA as its primary design platform. RAND North America, Dassault Systèmes’ partner, worked in close consultation with Barbeito to find the solution that best streamlined Barbeito’s design and manufacturing planning processes. CATIA will consolidate in one solution

the functionality its engineers currently struggle to access by switching between several diff erent applications. Barbeito & Associates will use CATIA

for every facet of yacht design, including hull design, steel structure design, piping, and interior design. It also plans to use the DELMIA digital manufacturing solution for communicating production information with the shipyards that build Barbeito’s designs. ‘We were wasting a lot of time going

to one application for conceptual surface design, then another for the steel detailing, and another for the piping and equipment,’ said Arthur Barbeito, company founder and president. ‘T e diff erent systems also multiplied the time it took to modify a

design because a change in one system had to be manually repeated in the others. With CATIA, we have all of our essential functionality in one system. We expect CATIA’s combination of advanced design functionality and scalability to make us more effi cient by orders of magnitude.’ The designer recently partnered

with Wuhan Nanhua High-Speed Ship Engineering Co, a Chinese shipyard that uses Dassault Systèmes’ CATIA design authoring soſt ware. T e single platform collaboration between designer and shipyard, a result of the shipbuilding industry’s continuing adoption of Dassault Systèmes’ PLM technology, is anticipated to yield signifi cant effi ciencies.

Increased time-to-market In other news, Timmerman Yachts, a world leader in the superyachts industry, has also selected Dassault Systèmes’ PLM solutions to foster collaboration and streamline product development for new motor yachts. ‘The decision to select the Dassault

Systèmes’ PLM solutions for shipbuilding is based on the idea of partnership. We have not just chosen a solution, but a partner which can help us implement a long term global strategy of excellence for our shipyard, with permanent innovation and performance in all domains,’ explained Dmitry Mironenkov, chief executive offi cer, Russia, Timmerman Yachts.
