Specialist breaks new record
T e second of Austal’s two 65m vehicle-passenger ferries built for the Sultanate of Oman has become the fi rst diesel-powered vehicle ferry to reach a speed of 56knots.
July, near Henderson, Western Australia. The feat makes it the fastest diesel-
H
powered vehicle passenger ferry in the world – a title previously held by its sister vessel Shinas, which recorded a maximum speed of 55.9knots last year. The vessel was delivered to Oman in
August, where it joined Shinas in providing a new tourism service to Oman’s Musandam Peninsular as flagships of the Sultanate’s expanded marine transport network. Shinas was delivered in June. T e performance of the two 65m vehicle-
passenger catamaran ferries showcases the ability of the Austal design team, which successfully developed a new, customised, high-efficiency hull design, capable of delivering record-breaking performance, while Austal’s construction team managed to meet demanding weight targets. As well as reaching speeds of over 50knots,
the ferries carry 208 passengers and 56 cars along an intended 180nm route. Passengers will experience good comfort across three classes – tourist, fi rst, and VIP. Seating and catering facilities are all located on a single deck, with seakeeping comfort enhanced by the Austal SeaState Motion Control System. Onboard features also include a

helicopter landing facility suitable for a medium class helicopter, which will be capable of assisting in search and rescue and medevac operations. Both vessels are powered by four MTU 20
cylinder TB73L 1163 series diesel engines each producing 6500kW and driving Rolls Royce/Kamewa 90SII waterjets. T ey have also been fi tted with four Reintjes gearboxes. T e vessels have been built in accordance with the requirements and under the survey of Det Norske Veritas, conforming to HSC 2000. Meanwhile, two New World First
Ferries are scheduled to enter service later in the year to meet the growing tourism demand generated from the dramatic increase in Macau’s tourist arrivals since the development of its gaming and mega-resort industry. With five Austal 47.5m high-speed
passenger catamarans already in service in the New World First Ferry fl eet, the latest ferries operate at service speeds in excess of 42knots while carrying 418 passengers. Both vessels are powered by four MTU 16V 4000 M70, each producing 2320kW and driving Rolls Royce/Kamewa 63 SII waterjets. T ey have also been fi tted with four Reintjes VLJ 930 gearboxes. Austal has now signed a contract for a further four 47.5m vessels with Cotai
WaterJets (Macao) Ltd, adding to the initial 10 vessel contract signed in 2006 by sister company Venetian Marketing Services Limited (VMSL). T e new vessels will be identical to those
currently under construction at Austal’s Henderson shipyard, and the vessels for New World First Ferries. T ey will be delivered in the fi rst half of 2009. Of the initial 10 vessels ordered by VMSL, fi ve have already been completed.
Fast patrol Following the recent completion of Australia’s 14-vessel Armidale class patrol boat fl eet, Austal has announced a contract to build six 30m aluminium fast patrol craſt for the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. All six vessels will be constructed at Austal’s facilities in Henderson, and are scheduled for delivery by early 2010. Each vessel will have a small 12-man crew, a maximum speed of 40knots, and will be armed with three general purpose machine guns and a 20mm cannon. Each patrol boat is to be powered by two MTU 16 cylinder 2000 series diesel engines driving a Kamewa waterjet propulsion system, allowing a maximum speed of 40knots and a maximum range of more than 1000nm at 10knots.
