Opinions
David Neville, product manager,
Pownall Carpets, samples the sellers
on the high street and predicts the
trends over the coming months...
Beige is such a staple part of the consumers’ diet for
interior makeovers that it is now nigh on impossible to
move away from its influence.
This is even truer for carpet, where the flooring has
long been seen as a neutral back drop against more vibrant
wallpaper and curtains.
And so, the fact remains, beige is still king.
However, some consumers out there are making a bit
of a move away and dipping the very tips of their toes
into colour!
Yet, we are not talking acid yellows and shocking pinks,
but more liveable and subtle tones such as reddish pinks,
egg blues and pastel greens can be found creeping into
living rooms and dining rooms.
The predicted rise of strong neutral tones such as rich
chocolate browns and almost black blues has never really
taken hold, except perhaps for those home owners who
have opened their doors to interior designers. There is no
denying that the results can be stunning, it’s just that the
homeowner does not generally feel comfortable enough
in its longevity to take a chance.
This stumbling block for carpet will also prevent
patterned carpet seeing as much dominance as it once did.
Even with the hype in the media, some manufacturers
saying that it is the next big thing and excluding those
with very specific interior styles that demand a patterned
carpet to be completed, your average householder will
still, nine times out of ten, choose a plain or berber-style
carpet.
While bearing a degree of cyclical variation at the
premium end of the sector, trends in carpet remain
fairly consistent, with colour a constant, while texture
meanders slowly between loop and cut pile and various
interpretations of each, offering consumers more of a
revolution rather than a evolution in carpet trends.
