be replaced without a lengthy decommissioning of the whole toilet block, resulting in the
least inconvenience to the traveller.
With millions of people passing through BAA airports every week, these are
demanding environments that operate way outside the normal framework of public toilet
use in every respect. Products that might have an expected life of years can fail in months,
even weeks, so product selection is critical. Peter Tennent of Factorydesign, says: “Research
undertaken on components that comprise the toilet, led to the selection of the very best
equipment available.”
Where no suitable product existed, new products have been designed, such as a brand
new basin designed by Factorydesign and manufactured by Armitage Shanks. It features
an integral splash-back as part of the basin, a result of attempts to remove the need for
silicon sealing.
Huge effort has gone into creating a space that is bright and clean and, of course, as
easy as possible to keep that way. The new concept is designed to remove areas that are
difficult to clean, while lighting has been used at ceiling and floor level to elevate the
overall appearance and encourage these areas to be kept clean.
“Toilets are a key driver of traveller satisfaction at airports,” explains Tennent. “This
is a significant opportunity for BAA to create a bright, fresh environment to enhance the
traveller’s experience of their journey.
“We have created a flexible design concept that is easy to customise, easy to install,
clean and friendly and, importantly, easy to keep that way.” designer
