The project was sponsored by a number of large, and in some
cases, international companies who all have strong green credentials.
The majority of the proceeds created by Project7Ten will be donated
to Healthy Child Healthy World (HCHW), an organisation which is
dedicated to educating the public about harmful environmental
toxins often found in building products and furnishings, which can
damage the health of children.
HCHW campaigns to help the public learn about healthier
practices, solutions, and products in the marketplace and to create
standards and policies for safer products, foods, materials, and
chemicals used in the home – promoting safer options and new
alternatives.
Bearing this in mind, Project7Ten was built to very exacting
green standards and every choice that was made regarding the
materials and products used, from the bedding, furniture and fabric
to the concrete and wood was put through an environmentally
conscious ‘filter’.
Its high level of energy efficiency was achieved in a number
of ways. Firstly, the property was fitted with Energy Star qualified
appliances from GE Monogram. Energy Star is a joint program of
the US Environmental Protection Agency and the US Department of
Energy which helps people save money and protect the environment
through energy efficient products and practices.
Within the EU, the Energy Star is a voluntary labelling scheme
and its use is controlled by an agreement between the USA and
European Community. It is along the same lines as the European
Energy Label system, which informs people about the energy
efficiency of household electrical appliances in the UK. According
to GE, the decrease in greenhouse gas emissions over the life of
