As creators of the last flown interior of Concorde, Factorydesign has previous when it comes to
working in the aviation sector. Its latest work is an altogether more grounded project however...
As
part of its focus on improving passengers’ airport experiences, BAA has been
working with London-based product and transport designers Factorydesign – as
well as specialists in ergonomics Davies Associates and off-site fabrication firm Grant
Westfield - to produce a public toilet customized specifically to meet the needs of this
demanding environment.
The brief was to provide passengers with a quiet, clean place that is an enjoyable
experience during their journey.
Analysing years of BAA product development and applying the ergonomic findings
and learnings from the T5 toilet design, Factorydesign have created a new concept for
BAA toilets, based around a modular wall panel system. The first trial block is now
operational in London Gatwick.
The new concept has common components that can be tailored to suit different
airport locations and journey stage requirements through colour, large on-wall graphic
images and component product variances.
In addition to enhancing the traveller’s experience, ease of installation, cleaning and
maintenance are critical.
The new design features five different modules – basin, vanity, WC, urinal and vending
- that can be brought together in appropriate numbers and a variety of combinations to
allow the system to be adapted to suit the large variety of existing, sometimes awkward,
spaces available, as well as providing a kit of parts for new build installations.
The modules are built and tested off-site, which minimises the time taken for
installation and also speeds up maintenance by allowing a broken or damaged module to ➔
