Scapa results stronger
Scapa Group plc, global supplier of technical adhesive tapes, announced preliminary results for the
year ending March 2008.
Trading profit increased 36% to £9.5 million, delivering a similar increase in return on sales at 5.6%.
Chief executive Calvin O’Connor said: "The results for the year clearly demonstrate the substantial improve-
ment in Scapa’s performance despite the tougher trading environment experienced in North America in the
second half of the financial year. Whilst the current outlook is for challenging market conditions for the rest
of 2008, we remain confident that the Group’s business improvement programme will continue to drive
Scapa forward and have accordingly reinstated a dividend.”
2007-8 sales of £170.1 million represented a fall of £14.2 million in absolute terms but Scapa says that,
allowing for business disposals (£18.1m) and foreign exchange (£1.6m), the underlying sales trend was
3.3% growth.
European trading profit increased by 138% to £5m, a £2.9m improvement driven by substantial
improvements in the performance of two UK plants. Europe accounts for 60% of business. New Asian
management is reported to have delivered improvements in trading profit and a repositioning from low value
cloth tapes towards higher added value products, particularly for electronics. North American sales were flat
with growth from the medical sector offsetting a 20% decline in the construction and building sector.
Laying the foundations for new WASI
logistics centre
In February, the construction of the new logistics centre of
WAGENER & SIMON WASI GmbH & Co. KG, with headquarters
in Wuppertal, started.
On 6th June the laying of the
foundation stone for the
advanced development took
place.
For the medium term, WASI
intends to invest around 30
million euros in the new
facility in Wuppertal-Ronsdorf.
The construction project is the
largest single investment of the
Würth Group for the year 2008.
The 44,000m
2
will be
dominated by a building of
110m in length and 30m in height, housing a fully automated
high-bay warehouse for 10,300 pallets.
The site is to be developed in stages, whereby the first phase is
the construction of a hall with a floor area of 10,000m
2
. In order to meet future demands, there are
already plans for a 15,000m
2
extension.
“Located on a freeway, the site offers excellent accessibility, which is a key requirement considering that
up to 30 lorry loads of goods will be supplied to or collected from the warehouse every day. The new
logistics centre is to open in 2009.”
