SURFING
While business lays the foundation for Southampton’s
economic renaissance, the city is investing in a
bright new cultural future too as Roberta Comunian
explains.
THE WAVE
Southampton’s urban development has been led in the last two
decades by investment in retail, leisure and office/business facilities.
Ocean Village and the West Quay together with independent

investments by IKEA and Carnival have enabled further growth and
redevelopment.
The next stage of development will be led by culture and creativity,
in particularly by a new arts complex that will showcase visual art,
performing arts, film and Asian arts. The new development, comprising
two landmark towers which will shape the skyline of the city, will be
overlooking the City’s East Park and Guildhall Square, creating a new
cultural quarter for the city centre.
