Course: Accounting with finance
I would say that I am very interested in money. To me money
makes the world go round and that’s what attracted me to doing
an accountancy degree. I want to work as an accountant in a
bank, preferably one of the high street banks, which is why I also
have a Finance element to my degree. But it’s not money in a kind
of sterile way that excites me. I did some work experience with the
Bangladesh Welfare Association as an office assistant, my primary
responsibility being for cash management. I met a great many of
the people who came in for help and really enjoyed it. It woke in
me a passion for meeting and helping people. Part of that is
helping people’s dreams come true and at the core of that is the
concept of money, as it is the bottom line that determines the
decisions people make. Where there is no profit, there is no point,
so if I can guide people how to make the most of themselves
financially I think it is a good contribution.
I really believe it is important to respect people’s differences and
individual needs, particularly in the workplace. If you interact as
much as you can with fellow employees, you will get more out of

them and out of yourself. I see being a boss as being rather like a

father. You expect people to do what you say but it is also
important to listen to what others are saying too. That way you can

Course: E-Business
I really believe in the power of business to make things better in
The course I am taking is all about taking traditionally-focused
society. Businesses working together with local communities can

bricks to clicks, if you like, and that’s what I did my dissertation on. I
am actually passionate about the fashion industry. There are so
many companies in that business who are going online because
they think they have to, not because they want to embrace it as a
genuinely important way to improve what they do. That’s where I
want to be, designing web sites for fashion businesses to improve
their marketing. So anyone out there who needs help, hire me!
My particular interest is women’s clothing, jewellery and
accessories. I love fashion so much I actually blagged myself a
ticket for London Fashion Week. I rang up the organisers and
pretended to be a buyer! I got in on the industry days and also a
London fashion weekend for consumers.
I really believe that teamwork can achieve so much. Without it,
people don’t have a sense of their own value or position. I see the
future of business as a place where successful teams work with
others like them in the same industry or outside it in networks that
produce quality and efficiency. I’ve been working part-time for a
data storage company – I know, it couldn’t be more different from
the fashion world! – as a quality assistant. My job is to market quality
internally so that everyone in the business buys into the concept of
quality in everything they do. At the end of my year they asked me
to stay on; it’s very challenging, quite complicated and very
challenging, but it’s not where I see myself.
