“A business will succeed or fail according to the quality of its
workforce” is one of those mildly irritating axioms that business gurus
like to write on the back cover of their bestselling books. It is true
nonetheless. Typically, the costs of employment account for around
half of an organisation’s turnover and, especially in service-led
sectors, it is the customer-facing employee who can make or break
the business.
It is also true that in an economy with low unemployment employee
mobility increases. In other words, employees are more able to
adopt a flexible attitude to work, confident that if the current job
doesn’t work out something else will be in the pipeline. This
disproportionately affects lower paid or entry level jobs, where
employees are more likely to change jobs frequently.
As employers, you are always looking for well-motivated individuals
who want to work and can operate effectively as part of a team.
