he concept is simple; the applica- tion a bit more complex; combine a device which can facilitate betting on a game in play with the atmos- phere of a place like Lagasse’s stadium in the Palazzo and you have an intoxicating mix indeed. Betting in-running is taking many markets by storm but with it being pretty impractical anywhere other than online, there’s never been a way for venues to take advantage of the phenome- non. While some games can be modelled very accurately using past statistics and current form – soccer and baseball spring to mind – games like NFL football and bas- ketball are not so simple. The ‘wisdom of crowds’ is a powerful tool to gauge proba- bilities, and it is this which is effectively used on the exchanges to determine odds, with thousands of customers essentially distilling their views into a straightforward probability of the two or three results occurring. With some canny individuals making a living out of the slightest discrep- ancy of odds, Cantor will need to be very certain of the accuracy of their algorithms. There’s no doubting the potential of this technology. The potential to fit this system in the sportsbook of any major casino is simply massive. In-running betting is the future, celebrating and commiserating with other players in the room. Cantor Gaming appears to be at the forefront of what is sure to be a growing trend. With the ability to base the platform on personal data devices such as smart phones or ipads in the future, legislation permitting, Cantor is well placed to ride the wave of in-running betting across the world. It became the first company licensed to manufacture, distrib- ute, and operate a mobile gaming system by the state of Nevada and the first company to introduce In-Running wagering to Las Vegas, enabling wagering on live sporting events throughout the event. Paul Sculpher spoke with Steve Kezirian, the new chief operating officer of Cantor Gaming to find out more.
T
Casino Review: Cantor is now involved with a host of Las Vegas properties; Hard Rock, Venetian, Palazzo, M Resort, Tropi- cana. What exactly are you offering and how did the opportunity arise in the gam- bling capital of the world? Steve Kezirian: In 2003, our CEO, Lee Amaitis, came out to Nevada with a vision to bring mobile gaming to the state. The original idea that Lee conceived was to enable casino games on a closed private cellular network in Nevada. Nevada’s state laws needed to be amended to recognize the legality of mobile gaming and the Nevada Gaming Control Board needed to adopt
governing regulations for our paradigm- changing technology. What has since evolved is a different
proposition; using proprietary mobile devices within a casino property for a host of wagering options ranging from new proprietary games to unique sports wagering opportunities, to traditional casino-style games. However regarding sports wagering, the principle of applying trading technology to sports betting remains, and is a central part of what we do. Fundamentally our products allow people to bet or game throughout a resort, not just on a traditional casino floor, through hand- held devices or terminals. By creating an eDeck account, a customer can then play any of Cantor Gaming’s proprietary games among which are games such as Xtra Odds Blackjack (where the player can continue to bet after the cards are dealt) or Xtra Odds Baccarat (where additional propositions are offered after the cards are dealt) or a host of traditional casino games in designated areas of the hotel resort. The patrons can also sign up for In-Running betting where they can not only bet before the game but continue to bet during the game on a range of offerings including the full game outcome, and quarter or half-time outcomes, as well as a range of proposition offerings such as drive results, field goal attempts, etc. These bets can all be made through mobile devices, meaning that they can have a bet on the big game from any designated area, not just sitting in the sportsbook. Public areas within a resort are allowed and the mobile gaming devices themselves electronically enforce a “green zone” that locks players out when they are trying to make wagers outside of the designated area.
CR: The current standard for Las Vegas sports betting is that of consistency with each Sports Book offering the same lines and prices as competing books. Inside Wagers ignores this standard and show- cases a dynamic atmosphere of incredible odds. How does this work? SK: Inside Wagers is a line within the line, a revolutionary concept in the world of sports betting. We’re creating an environment that allows people to get in and out of games at a much lower cost. We’re creating an environment that allows people to get in and out of games at a much lower cost. Instead of the traditional 10 percent fee imposed on every bet, patrons will now be offered the opportunity to wager on an event at a substantial discount to the traditional rate.
