Induction after 25 years?

Whenever a new member of staff comes on board, we offer them a comprehensive induction to help them understand and buy into our distinctive culture here, but there are many existing Pensord People who have a wealth of experience in their specialist area, but who have never been offered the chance to build an understanding of life in other departments, and how they fit into the overall service offered by Pensord.

So we’re putting that right by taking the somewhat unusual step of taking staff with a range of service and from every area of the business through the induction process, to further increase the levels of understanding amongst colleagues, and build even stronger relationships for the benefit of publishers.

We’ve introduced a series of group inductions throughout

the company to familiarise the longer serving members of staff with areas of the business outside their own specific departments – to enhance the team ethos and our unique Pensord culture.

We started the process last summer with one day a month devoted to it, and the feedback has been great, as people have been given an itinerary, but are free to roam and discuss

issues of the business they perhaps do not fully understand with colleagues of other departments who will know the answers. It helps improve communication, enhances understanding and helps build relationships between internal customers. That has to be good for Pensord, and for our customers! Here is a sample of the feedback we have received from staff:

Tudor James Pre-press Operator; 33 years at Pensord:

“Very good. Knowing how other departments work, just getting the extra details of different jobs puts everything into a bigger picture.”

Sean Davies Stitching Operator; 5 years at Pensord

“I went to the meeting with scepticism but enjoyed seeing how other departments worked and have a better understanding of how the company operates.”

Caryll Maggs Finance Supervisor; 24 years at Pensord

“I was able to learn more about people’s roles and actually see the computer systems that they use. The words on the invoices now have more meaning and the effort put in by others is more evident.”

Jane Smith Title Manager; 27 years at Pensord

“In my role there is a requirement to know certain details of most aspects of production but unfortunately I cannot be an expert on all. Although I have been with the company for a considerable time, technology has moved on and day-to-day running has changed. With the induction programme it was an opportunity to catch up with any new processes, etc. I have quite a close working relationship with pre-press so this area was not alien to me, but I found the bindery department very interesting and I’m sure this will help me in the future. It has been an enhancement to my role as title manager.”
