Carbon footprints enter virgin territory

Pensord works with the most innovative companies in UK publishing and print to introduce the latest carbon footprint calculator

Now PPA is searching for data used for calculating the impacts of printing and finishing, operations that make a contribution to the total magazine carbon footprint. The next version of the calculator is expected to be available later this year.

Karl Gater, Operations Director

Pensord Operations Director Karl Gater has joined the biggest names in UK magazine publishing and printing to help enable publishers to quantify the carbon footprint in producing a magazine. The 20-strong PPA Carbon Footprint Working Group includes other sheet-fed, web offset and gravure printers, alongside a range of publishers, and environmental bodies such as the Carbon Trust.

PPA launched its magazine carbon calculator in May 2009, allowing publishers to quantify and understand the carbon footprint of an individual publication, and make informed decisions about how to reduce this footprint in the future and engage with supply chain partners to achieve future environmental aims.

Moving towards compliance Karl said: “Pensord is supplying information from our own sheet-fed perspective to help improve the value of the calculator as a decision support tool as it moves towards compliance with the carbon footprinting standards set out in PAS2050 – a specification of requirements for the assessment of the lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions associated with the product.

Enhanced knowledge “Publishers will be able to calculate the carbon footprint relevant to their own publishing needs, and make decisions based on this enhanced knowledge.”
