Training keeps on rolling

New recruits to our Pensord People Development Academy start an exciting learning journey that will help them enhance their abilities for the good of all our customers

In the last issue of the Pensord Edge, we reported the presentations and the awarding of certificates to the Management Team for the successful completion of our Leadership and Management Development Programme and, as part of our continued investment in our team, we now have the latest recruits to the Pensord People Development Academy (PPDA). Here we check on their progress, and look at the next batch of newcomers to the programme.

Operations Director Karl Gater is driving the internal training programmes, working with Training Consultant Jackie Lewis who has worked closely with Pensord for some time. Karl said: “It has been hugely encouraging to see the progress that our Pensord People have been making since graduation. The Management Team now have, and are using their newfound

skills to help deliver significant benefits to the company and its performance.

Job opportunity “A key success of our PPDA is Bindery Assistant Leighton Grimstead, who was one of the first graduates. He has recently been promoted to Bindery Operator because he is now equipped with the skills and experience to fit the bill perfectly. When a job opportunity arose, it meant we didn’t need to look outside to fill it – and that ability to promote internally is an important outcome of the Academy.

“Another PPDA member, Geraint Bayliss, showed an interest in people development, so he now fills a training role and produces training matrices for our pre-press department. It’s gratifying to see people respond to opportunities in such a positive way.”

Development journey In the autumn another five candidates – Printer Andrew Bevan; Receptionist Helen Chapman; Customer Care Clerk Joanna Szymanska; Wages/Finance Clerk Leanne Morris; and Production Scheduler Alison Williams started out on their own development journey, and we’ve been working together to tailor their specific programme to their particular needs, whether that is to gain a management position, or to broaden their skills.

“My development journey means I have an opportunity to improve my skills and achieve even more for our customers.”

What’s good for publishers, is good for us, so we are always looking for ways to support magazine titles aimed at helping and informing publishers. We are currently working on a number of these including a new magazine called Magazine Magazine, a title aimed at “making magazines make money”. As part of an exciting two year sponsorship deal we are supporting the International Federation of the

Periodical Press (FIPP) by printing their flagship quarterly title Magazine World, recognised by publishers around the world as the authoritative publication on magazine markets, which goes to 90 countries worldwide. We are also printing the first FIPP Innovations in Magazines report which will be launched at the Digital Innovators’ Summit 2010 in Berlin in March, an event for international digital magazine media.
