European sales of semiconductor
decreased in February

uropean sales for
semiconductors
decreased by 6.9% in
February 2009
compared with the
previous month, the World
Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS)
has reported. A downward trend in
sales was also observed across other
regions as the impact of the downturn
continues to impact on global markets.
One area in particular hit hard was
Japan with sales decreasing by 13.8%.
Slower sales were reported in
nearly every product category.
However, some segments, such as Total
NAND Flash Memory and MOS Digital
signal processors, actually showed
growth compared with the previous

month, with a growth rate of 4% and
3% respectively. This is an indicator that

Overall, European semiconductor
sales in February 2009 amounted to
US$ 2.114 billion. This corresponds to a
decline of 36.1% compared to the same

month last year. On a year to date basis
semiconductor sales declined by 33.5%.

the Euro continues to impact the
European sales picture. Measured in
Euro, semiconductor sales of 1.606
billion Euros in February 2009 were a
new record low for the last ten years.
This is down some 7.4% on the previous
month and down 28.9% versus the
same month a year ago. On a year to
date basis semiconductor sales declined
by 25.2% in 2009. On a worldwide
basis, semiconductor sales in February
2009 were US$ 14.167 billion, down
7.6% versus the previous month. This
results in a decline of 30.4% versus the
same month in 2008 and on a YTD basis
it results in a decline of 29.2%.
