Gifts

This evening’s Alumni Awards,
Though sweet reminders of the cords
That bind us since the salad days,
Are principally for us to praise
Four chosen from the very best;
Their many gifts are manifest.

The first has brightened many a scene
From Broadway to the silver screen:
In ‘Da’ or ‘Poor Beast in the Rain’,
As Eenie Mackie or Mary Jane,
O she can always be depended
To keep our disbelief suspended.

The second graced our ivory tower
With scholarship and student power
And saw that being Number One
Is only good if fairly won;
The moguls quake before the sophist
And show respect unto his office.

The third wears the full panoply
Of that rare bird, philanthropy:
This College grateful for its share,
We keep the donor in our prayers
And honour him who must select
How best to give to best effect.

The fourth, a man of many parts,
Began within the healing arts
(the Tercentenary in four years…)
But mark how in both hemispheres
Those buildings holding up the sky
Are testament to his sharp eye.

For each from his or her own gift
Has given (never as short shrift):
The Good Lord loves a cheerful giver
But now it’s your turn to deliver
And so without a moment’s pause
Give them your generous applause!
