WHAT IS THE CSC?

The Central Societies Committee (CSC) is the College body which regulates student societies, granting recognition and funding as well as overseeing activity. Formally established in 1969, the CSC is now responsible for 98 societies covering diverse interests.

The CSC would like to invite Trinity alumni who are interested in finding out about society life on campus to contact them. If you were involved with societies during your time in Trinity and would like to be added to an alumni mailing list or have a general query please email Emma Matthews (e. emma@csc.tcd.ie).

The Festival opened with the annual Players Ball at The Button Factory on 11 February, a black-tie night with a diamond theme. The committee wishes to thank all the members, past and present, who made this society what it is and who contributed to the anniversary festival.

LGBT Society Celebrates 25 Years

To mark the anniversary of its official founding, and to recognise the pioneering attitude towards gay rights which led to its existence, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Society marked its 25th birthday with The Wilde Ball in the Unitarian Church on 5 March 2008. The first official gay society in any Irish university, the Dublin University Gay Society was formed in 1983. This society promoted the Movement for Homosexual Law Reform, which ultimately achieved the decriminalisation of homosexuality in 1993. Its founders were Senator David Norris M.A. (1968) and Her Excellency Mrs. Mary McAleese, President of Ireland, M.A. (j.o.), LL.D. (2000 h.c.) (1985) – then lecturing in law in Trinity – and it later took on Dr Mary Robinson LL.D., M.A., S.C., LL.D. (h.c), H.F.T.C.D. (1967) as its lead counsel. DU Gay Soc soon went on to add lesbians to their title, and later bisexuals and transgender people, eventually becoming the vibrant and active LGBT Society that exists in Trinity today.
