GET GREEN
Something to Get Green about…
Awareness:
?º 12 million barrels of oil = the amount of oil consumed in the US to produce enough plastic bags
for take home carting.
?º The amount of time it takes plastic bags to decompose in the landfill = 500 years
?º Producing paper bags requires more energy and creates more air and water pollution than
producing plastic bags.
?º Recycling paper is much more energy-intensive than recycling plastic—-and then there’s the
issue of all those trees.
?º The amount of trees to create the 10 billion paper grocery bags = 14 million
Solutions:
?Ã Reusing plastic and paper bags helps; keep a supply of them in your trunk for groceries and use
them until they are too worn, then recycle.
?Ã Make like a European and bring your own baskets when you go to the market. Delicate foods
will not get crushed when you put it in a basket.
?Ã Become habit forming, as the inconvenience disappears when you bring your own bags time REUSE
after time.
?Ã Better yet, pack compact nylon bags, hemp, jute, canvas, cotton or recycled plastic textile bags
in your trunk for shopping trips; just return them to the trunk after unpacking groceries.
?Ã Make your own re-usable bags with your families name or use favorite sport team colors.
