Painted
Furnishings
a cottage industry revival
Cottage Furniture refers to style of painted home furnishings
made in the mid-nineteenth century in the USA. These now
highly sought after victorian time era pieces, were hand made
and were usually sold in sets or “suites”; consisting of a bed,
night stand, chest of drawers, mirrored dresser and even
matching rocking chair. The pieces typically crafted from less
expensive woods such as pine or poplar, so the price reflected
the absence of cherry or mahogany. The pieces would then be
painted in solid colors such as yellow, green, or brown, and
decorated with floral or fruit bouquets painted accents or grain
painted to camouflage the unappealing grain in
the wood.
So if you happen upon a piece of
cottage furniture with its corners
chipped, finish a bit crackled, give it

If you would like to paint a piece to
to look old, Milk Paint, does the job
real well though. This authentic milk
paint is truly green too. There are no vocs,
it’s nontoxic, and can be used on virtually any
surface, even walls. With nearly two dozen colors to choose,
the hardest thing maybe figuring out what color to pick. You
may even mix colors together for a one of a kind color. It is truly
a fun product to work with.
