Living Well
Awareness of the Breath
T. Bennett
How many times have you heard ‘catch your
breath’? The source of our strength is in that
breath. But, because it is an involuntary
bodily function, we take for granted the vital
importance in the ‘fullness of each breath’ we
take and then buy into substitutes as another
source for the most natural form of
energizing ones self, CO2. Without going all
lala-metaphysical on you, I will offer a simple
practice that takes no more than a minute of
time to exercise. You will access the source
of energy to replenish what strength you may
have given away during your day or overspent
on a task at work, dealing with family or
simply life’s daily routine.
There is an ancient practice in yoga called
pranayama, Sanskrit meaning ‘lengthening of
breath’. I am not referring to head stands or
body in pretzel positions, just breathing. This
practice has many disciplines within it. Please
feel free to google or find a book or a class
on this for more information. There is so
much to learn.
The most important point I can offer to you
is to acknowledge and create an awareness as For those dips in energy during the day, take
to the quality of breaths you take. It will be a a walk to the water cooler at work, or stand

breathers. This is evidence of our lacking that
life’s vitality or having the ‘out of gas feeling’
not found in practicing deeper breathing
living.
Simple practice; inhale and exhale a good three
times, filling up your lung capacity for 15
seconds and exhaling for 15 seconds. You
may also notice the natural reaction is to put
your shoulders back and open your rib cage
to consciously make room for some new air.
