Baking soda and baking powder are both chemical leaveners used to make baked
goods such as cakes and muffins.  In recipes calling for baking powder, baking soda
can be used, along with some cornstarch and cream of tartar.  Baking powder cannot,

At the Pie Wash
For a nice shine, as soon as the pie is removed from oven, mix a quarter cup of
light corn syrup with a couple Tablespoons of water. Boil for 3-5 minutes. When
the pie is fully baked, immediately brush the thinned syrup over the top of the
crust.
