14-24 JUNE
The South Bank’s annual Meltdown festival takes place 14-24
June, and this year it has been curated by seminal Bristol trip
hop outfi t Massive Attack. They will be playing on the 22nd,
preceded by the likes of Manchester’s Elbow (16 June), a
reunited Gang Of Four (20 June), and ‘An Evening With MC5 and
Primal Scream’ (24 June). However, the date that we’re most
excited about take place 19 June, when Grace Jones – who
we reckon is overdue some fresh reappraisal and recognition
– takes the stage of the Royal Festival Hall. Although playing
the odd corporate gig or club booking in London over the last
decade, this will be Jones’ most high-profi le UK performance for
many years, so expect something rather special. Here’s hoping
the show helps gain momentum for the release of her long-
awaited new album, rumoured to be arriving later in the year.
Other Meltdown events include a ‘Silent Disco’ with guest DJ
Peaches on the 19th, George Clinton and Parliament/Funkadelic
on Saturday 21 June.
