Welsh women are being encouraged to consider a career in the Fire Service, with the message “To be part of our team you don’t have to be one of the boys”.
The Welsh Assembly Government has teamed up with Wales’ three fire and rescue services to specifically target potential female recruits who, as it stands, only make up 3 per cent of all fire-fighters in the country.
In South Wales, there are only 23 women out of 1,500 fire-fighters. Claire Morgans, of South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, said this was the first time all in Wales had come together to raise awareness among women that a career with them is not “out of their grasp”.
“The reason we want to get women fire-fighters in is to challenge the stereotypical images of fire-fighters being big and butch and white and male,” she said.
And, Social Justice and Public Service Delivery Minister Andrew Davies said: “The fire and rescue services play a crucial role in the safety and security of Wales and it is vital they have the right mixture of talent to meet the evolving needs of the 21st Century.”
And finally… Things you really shouldn’t do on your first day in a new job
Imagine the scene. It’s your very first day in your new job and you want to make a good first impression with your boss. Right? But a woman in Oxfordshire took making a first impression too literally.
Driving into the car park of her new office, this new starter parked next to her boss’s Porsche, and then watched in horror as her car exploded - and torched his too.
Sarah Dean was driving to her new admin job with a travel firm when she noticed smoke coming from her VW Polo.
She carried on and parked next to managing director Craig Burkinshaw’s £35,000 Porsche 911, reports The Sun.
But seconds later, flames began shooting out from the VW’s bonnet, then ignited the fuel tank as the car went up in a huge fireball.
The blaze was so intense it melted the side of the Porsche, warped the chassis and set fire to the tyres.
Fire-fighters rushed to the scene and doused the blaze - but not before it wrote off another car parked the other side of Sarah’s.
One of her new colleagues said: “Sarah’s new here and hadn’t even met the boss yet - what a way to introduce yourself.”
“Everyone found it very funny, except Sarah of course. She could have been badly hurt. But the boss has been really good about it,” she added.
Her boss was not available for comment…he was out buying a new car.
