Your ‘future is important to us’

I must apologise to you all. Each issue we write about what it is like to work in different industries but so far we have failed to talk about what it’s like to work for one of Wales’ biggest employers – contact centres.

So this week we have decided to make amends and look at this area – the good, the bad and the great.

If images of chickens wearing headsets, answering machines repeating the words ‘Your call is important to us’ or people with annoying voices asking customers ‘Can I help yooooo?’ spring to mind when you think about contact centres, then think again.

Stereotypes aside, working in a contact centre is fast becoming more than just a job - it is now a serious career option for people of all ages and from all walks of life with 27,000 people already employed in over 160 contact centres across Wales.

In Scotland, for instance, pupils from secondary schools in Edinburgh are being sent on ‘Contact Centre Courses’ to learn what it is like to work in a contact centre and how to use computers and telephones in a professional way.

And with more and more centres planned to open in South Wales in the next few years it seems that the contact centre industry is here to stay. This week’s issue of Welsh Recruitment looks at what it is really like to work in the industry and explores the career opportunities that are available – from new starters to senior roles.

But if the thought of sitting at a desk all day in front of a computer screen is not your ideal job environment, then you might want to consider another job from our recruitment pages.

This week’s recruitment news features good news for jobs in the Valleys, investment in Cwmbran and Port Talbot and a recruitment drive by the Welsh Fire Service. Plus we have the latest jobs for the region.
