Tired of Rush Hour Traffic - Make the Move to Merthyr
As the largest iron-producing region in the world and its close proximity to the rich coal seams in the Rhondda Valley, Merthyr Tydfil was instrumental in making South Wales the most economically important centre for British trade during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, second only to Liverpool in global terms.
But the landscape of the town has changed substantially over the last twenty years. The old mills, collieries and iron works have gone and have been replaced by newer industries, especially contact centres.
T-Mobile is the largest contact centre in Merthyr employing over 750 staff with the company providing services for one fifth of all mobile users in the UK.
Situated half a mile off the A470, T-Mobile’s offices are within a 30 minute drive from Cardiff with the added benefit that staff travelling to and from work in the mornings and evening drive against the main flow of traffic meaning that the daily commute doesn’t involve getting stuck in the rush-hour.
The mobile communications company has long been established as one of Merthyr’s leading employers and they have plans to continue expanding their workforce, which is good news for the 55,000 residents of the town.
The service industries have replaced the industries of yesteryear and are making use of a rich and varied industrial past that most areas of the UK would find hard to match.
Huw Lewis, Labour Assembly Member for Merthyr Tydfil & Rhymney, says: ‘The local authorities in both valleys have made progress in land reclamation and environmental schemes that are slowly healing scars on the landscape and returning the area to its original beauty. There are good and improving communication links and plenty of facilities for new business. The area is probably now a more pleasant place to live and work than it has been for 200 years’.

He enjoys looking after T-Mobile’s customers and often is responsible for upgrading their accounts and selling T-Mobile products such as accessories and insurance.
Easy Commute
Home to Leon is Porth, Rhondda and the commute takes him 35 minutes door-to-door. “The roads are so quiet in the morning as I’m travelling in the opposite direction to the main rush-hour traffic. I don’t think I’ve ever experienced a traffic jam, it’s great!”
Nicky Spragg, 39, is a Recruitment Advisor and her commute takes just 20 minutes from the Heath area of Cardiff and she uses the time to catch up with Terry Wogan. She comments: “I really like listening to Radio 2. My commute gives me 20 minutes to listen to Wogan, laugh at his jokes and sing along to the music! It’s a hassle free journey and when I get to work parking at T-Mobile is really easy as there’s secure parking for all employees – you can’t say that if you work in Cardiff City Centre.”
Great Environment
“I’ve worked for various call centres and was amazed by what T-Mobile has to offer in comparison to other businesses in Cardiff: really short, easy commute; great culture; great offices and just an all-round fab place to work!” says Nicky.
Leon continues: “I really like the culture at T-Mobile – it’s very friendly and supportive. If you want to progress your career then there are plenty of training opportunities to take advantage of to ensure you step up on the career ladder. I also have flexibility in my job, for example, on some days I can start at 10am which is great when I want to get things done in the morning before I start work.”
T-Mobile in Merthyr Tydfil employs over 750 staff at the bright and airy contact centre on the Rhyd-y-car Business park. On site there is a subsidised restaurant, cyber cafe (with free internet access) and free tea and coffee throughout the day.
Travelling options
Travelling to T-Mobile needn’t be by car. There are frequent and reliable bus services to take advantage of, and the Merthyr train station is 2 minutes from the T-Mobile contact centre.
Some people use the car share scheme. This is perfect when you live close to a colleague who also works the same shift patterns – not only does it cut down on the number of cars on the road but it also means that you can share fuel costs.
T-Mobile in Merthyr Tydfil attracts people from all over South Wales, from Swansea to Pontypridd and Cardiff to Pontypool.
