Cheyne name – they remember one
of Chelsea’s first landlords. In 1655
a lady named Jane Cavendish
married Charles Cheyne. The
Cavendish family were wealthy

London landowners, and Lady Jane’s
dowry meant that on marriage,
Cheyne was able to buy what had
once been Henry VIII’s manor house.
He and his wife renamed it Chelsea
Place and modernised it. Their son

William inherited the property on
Charles’ death in 1698, and in 1712 it
was bought by Sir Hans Sloane.
BERTRAND RUSSELL AND
ALFRED WHITEHEAD
Bertrand Russell (1872-1970), a
mathematician, logician and
philosopher, lived at numerous
Chelsea addresses over the
course of his life, including 14
Cheyne Walk. He and Alfred
Whitehead (1861-1947), a
philosopher who lived at 17
Carlyle Square, co-wrote Principia
Mathematica (The Principles of
Mathematics) while living in
Chelsea.
MARGARET DAMER DAWSON
Margaret Dawson (1875-1920),
founder of the women’s
police force, is
remembered in a plaque
on the wall at 10
Cheyne Row.
Dawson began the
Women’s Police
Volunteers on the
outbreak of World War
One in 1914, paving the
way for women to enter
the police service.
