but it’s beautiful. They are called artwork prints and essentially it
almost happens at the same time as creating the garment and you
think about the cut and the form but also about how the print
sculpts around the body (Maria drapes a gown over a couch). There are
no seams on the dress except in the back, but I have painted it so
you wouldn’t see where the seams are. Each of the petals actually
becomes a petal across the back. So it’s really designed around the
concept of the garment. It is much more time consuming – it takes
anywhere between two and five days to paint a piece and then to do
each of the different sizes – because if you are painting the shape of
the actual garment and not painting the fabric, every single size has
a different fit. But the result is something you can’t get any other
way. Everything is produced in a limited number so they are kind of
cut and made one by one. You can’t mass produce something like
that.
Do you believe that your philosophy sets you apart from other
designers?
Completely – that’s what we do. We have had women in here who
have been more or less in tears because they are feeling terrible
about themselves for whatever reason, often after having a baby and
feeling lousy about their body and they don’t fit into anything and
have been to every shop to try and find something to wear for a
particular thing. They come in and feel like a woman and beautiful
in everything and often say, “I don’t know what to choose?” – that’s
a huge endorsement. That’s really what I do it for… It’s about
making women feel gorgeous; it’s a special gift.
