showing the entire spectrum of David Mellor’s works
over the past half century, from tea spoons to traffic
lights.
Corin puts much of his father’s commercial success
down to intuition and “pure determination”.
“He was terribly single minded and had this instinct
of generally getting things right. It’s a bit like him
setting up in Sloane Square selling nails and
doorknobs and knockers. He got away with it because
he did such a lovely display and only sold the best.”
The 40th anniversary of the Sloane Square shop is
now being celebrated with the publication of the book
“David Mellor
David Mellor Design. Described by Corin as “pretty
much a rather funky picture book”, the illustrated
survey has been complied by Brian Webb and is part
was terribly
of a series of design books published by Antique
Collector’s Club. Written by Teleri Lloyd-Jones, the
book comes with a foreword by Sir Terence Conran,
single minded
who was a friend and contemporary of David’s.
A small selection of commemorative products will
also be released in October and a special window
and had this
display is planned for the shop, as well as a party for
past and present employees of the shop.
Looking back over the history of the company,
instinct of
Corin doesn’t think the concept has changed all that
much. The original ironmonger concept was
abandoned when it became clear that ever-rising
generally
Sloane Square rents made the sale of ironmongery and
tools uneconomic. But other than that, the original
principle of selling things which work well and look
getting things
good still applies. And if further testament were
needed to the success of David Mellor’s designs, many
of the products originally sold in 1969 are still
right”

as ever.
