Ian Stuart’s
World of Couture
Ian Stuart is the jet-setting evening and
bridal-wear designer with the world at his
feet. Waterfront caught up with this
fashion guru to talk 1950s trends, Dior and
dressing the Royals
an Stuart has always had a passion for
fashion, art, music and theatre. A passion
that drove him to a world of fashion,
evolving into one of the country’s best
loved bridal and evening-wear designers. Upon
graduating in London, Ian began his training at
Bellville Sassoon, one of London's finest couture
houses, specialising in creating gowns for social-
ites and members of the Royal family, where Ian
learnt how to sketch, how couture gowns are
made for clients and how to balance design ideas.
T_his training was invaluable to Ian and gave him
the knowledge of cut, proportion, balance and
wear-ability within design. Ian then went on to
create bi-annual collections for leading bridal
and evening wear manufacturers in London,
before moving to New York to further his career,
where he created bridal-wear sold throughout
the world. With more than a decade of knowl-
edge and experience behind him, the cutting-
edge designer decided that it was time to launch
his own bridal-wear brand. Launching his own
brand allowed Ian to concentrate on creating
collections to reflect his passion for innovative
bridal design without compromise.
T_he theatrical gowns and provocative style that
define the Ian Stuart bride are a reflection of his
personal outlook on life, constantly finding
inspiration from music, theatre and nightlife,
while absorbing elements of the culture which
surrounds.
