Everton Football Club also
recognised the importance to the
community, and donated their archives
to the Collection for conservation and
display. Many of the items have been
donated by or secured from former
players and their families.
T_h e Collection is now known as “T_h e
Everton Collection” and has secured
Heritage Lottery funding with the
Liverpool Record Offi ce to conserve rare
items, to increase availability to the people
and to become a resource to the City. Two
archivists and a conservator are working to
preserve and digitise the Collection, now
valued at over £2 million, which is planned
to be open to the people for view next year.
Recent purchases include an outstanding
collection of memorabilia from the fi rst time
London hosted the Olympic games a century
ago. Ex-Evertonian Arthur Berry won an
association football gold medal with the GB
team at the London games of 1908 and picked
up a second four years later at the Stockholm
Olympiad.
It took 25 years to accumulate the Collection
which includes a medal from every competition
Everton have won, except for the 1995 FA Cup
- including a League Championship medal from
1890/91, the year the fi rst title medals were struck.
T_h ere are also programmes stretching back to 1881, including the
earliest known Manchester United programme (then Newton Heath
FC) as well as caps, contracts and ticket stubs. T_h ere is also the
complete collection of club ledgers between 1880 and 1964, some of
which document the split which led to the formation of Liverpool FC.
