Tesco migrates network in ¤10m deal
By Marie Boran
SUPERMARKET chain Tesco is
upgrading to a single, IP-only network
in a five-year contract valued at over
¤10m. Eircom will be the exclusive
supplier of the data and voice services
to Tesco Ireland using its Business IP
product line. The network will connect
up all 110 Tesco stores to headquarters
and will integrate with the existing IP
platform used by Tesco UK.
The new infrastructure will
quadruple Tesco’s current network
capacity and will mean that VoIP will
be increasingly used as part of the

Companies must futureproof their
firms with savvy IT investments
WHEN the economic outlook toughens, businesses often postpone
capital expenditure to conserve costs. Yet, shrewd investments in
technology with a proven ROI can create efficiency and cost savings
and pay for themselves in a short space of time – typically between 9
and 12 months, says Declan Torsney at Zetes Ireland.
Good mobile technology can make workers more productive and
really differentiate a company’s customer service. With the cost of
initial investment just ¤5000, it has become very affordable. But key
to successful implementations is working with a supplier that can
help you determine the ROI and develop a sound business justifica-
tion. Zetes Ireland has worked with a number of SMEs to do just this, many of whom invested as little as ¤3,000.
One of the latest mobile solutions provided by Zetes is the mobile VPN, which increases uptime and connectivity
levels for mobile workers, in addition to managing their daily workflows. Mobile printing and automated data
capture systems using barcodes also deliver superb efficiencies to retailers and manufacturers.
Proof of Delivery (ePOD) systems, which capture signatures at the point of product or service delivery, help
improve customer satisfaction and drive greater accountability. A further benefit of using ePOD is the reduced
accounting cycle as invoices can be generated immediately.
In the supply chain, stock-picking accuracy can be greatly improved through voice technology, handheld
terminals or barcode scanning. And in addition to improved traceability, companies can also streamline paper
processes within the supply chain. By automatically capturing data, both manual administration and the poten-
tial for resulting errors are minimised.
Recently, Zetes introduced a scanning system at a drugs manufacturer to ensure the right ingredients were
used in the right quantities. The firm saw a return on their original ¤20,000 investment within the year through
improved quality control and lowered administrative expenses. Plus, by giving scientists and management access
to real-time shop-floor information, the firm could build quality checks into its production process.
