What would a sports psychologist need
to know about surfing to successfully
implement these strategies?
“With surfing when you are out there in the water you
are on your own you can not hear your coach from
the sideline, you need self management to get your
mind in the right frame.
The surfers have 20 mins to catch up to 10 waves
and get scored on their best two waves, there may be
4 surfers in the water so you need to be in the correct
position to be above everyone else, it’s like a game of
chess in the water and you have to compete against
that as well as the elements. It’s also scored
subjectively and it’s about scoring on the criteria. You
need to keep all these things in your head and keep
evaluating every 5 mins; are you in the right
position etc?”
