The English Garden
from top: abraham darby rose,
paeonia, allium, rosemary and
hyacinth
What is it about English gardens that captures
Americans and has inspired so many to be a bit
more Brit? First, let me say they are dedicated and
orderly through use of symmetry and yet
artistically free with whimsey through mix of
color and variety in texture. Did I say dedicated?
Next, their deliberate use of layer upon layer; like
an orchestra with all sections seated at once is
great example of depth and understanding of
timing.
I am extremely fascinated with their strategic
placement and purposefulness in the use of
pathways as mini galleries for each bloom. The
variety of stone pathways and steps provide
beauty, definition and function as easy access to
different garden areas. Also, the sprinkle of the
potted containers amongst the beds as if to
showcase the pot and pedestal as a sculpture-like
presence.
A brit inspired?
