COME
In a city that is becoming increasingly more impossible to live in, with
its inhabitants suffering greatly under a failing economy, the unaffordable cost of
living, a shortage of jobs, and the overwhelming struggle to keep up, with
whatever it might be… you would think that people would just stop coming. But
this is not so. Each year thousands of people make their move to the ‘Big Apple’,
the ‘City That Never Sleeps’, the ‘Capital of the World’ as it were. All of these
people, in hopes of conquering their individual versions of the ‘American Dream.’
The population of New York City stood at a staggering 8.2 million people three
years ago. This large number combined with only 321 sq. miles of landmass has
put the city’s population density at 26,403 people per square mile, the largest of
any US city. New York is the epicenter of just about everything. The cultural
diversity of New York is the main attraction and ever since its discovery in 1524
by Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano New York has seen a wealth of people
from all across the world inhabit its land. Following this discovery came its
A
“purchase” and settlement by Dutch colonists and in 1664 the English conquered
and renamed the great city “New York.” The British held control of the
prosperous location until 1783 after they left the city for the inauguration of
President George Washington six years later. During this time the population was
at 33 thousand, had tripled by 1810, and had reached 1.5 million by 1890. Ten
years later the number had more than doubled to a population of 3.4 million and
would steadily increase by one million every decade until the 1950s.
Today, New York stands as a product of that rapid growth and cultural exchange
and the amount of people entering the jungle is still increasing. The following
S
people are examples of this increase. These individuals make up a group of hopeful
New Yorkers who’ve stepped into the unknown in hopes of finding something.
Perhaps something they will only find in New York.
